Print&Media News: Trinket Expands Its Finishing Services with Duplo DDC-810 PRO

Trinket is now available digitally

Trinket Oy has been developing its production over decades. The most recent investments include a Duplo DuSense DDC-810 PRO spot varnisher supplied by Ricoh, which complements the company's finishing of printed products.

Trinket has not had a habit of making sudden changes in direction. Instead, the company has steadily increased its services and production capacity, listening to the needs of its customers. The idea of providing the most comprehensive service possible has long been the basis of its operations.

– We have maintained that we strive to serve customers comprehensively. We have always grown the area that is most attractive and developed new things alongside it, says Petri Heikola, CEO of Trinket.

The company's production combines traditional relief and offset printing, digital sheet-fed printing, large format production and versatile post-processing services. Large format production started about ten years ago, and in the early 2020s it became an even more significant part of the operation.

Digital sheetfed printing has also grown consistently. Trinket now has four Ricoh digital presses, and the machine fleet has been developed in collaboration with the equipment supplier over several contract periods.

“The digital printing side has grown in every cycle. Every time contracts have been renewed, operations and the number of machines have grown at the same time,” Heikola describes.

The missing piece

A recent investment is the Duplo DuSense DDC-810 PRO, acquired in the spring, which can be used to implement digital spot varnishing and create three-dimensional, finger-touch varnish effects.

Special finishes are not new territory for Trinket. The company has long offered a variety of varnishes, foils, embossing and other impressive finishing solutions. The new DuSense brings more flexibility to their implementation.

“We have been doing various special post-processing for a long time. However, digital spot varnishing was the missing piece,” says Heikola.

The investment is also driven by changes in the printing market. Print runs are decreasing, but the number of jobs may increase at the same time. This favours digital production technology, where start-up costs are minimal and job changes are fast.

Ricoh's Janne Laakso and Trinket's Petri Heikola believe that Duplo DuSense will bring a new distinguishing factor to Trinket.

According to Heikola, DuSense is particularly well suited for small and medium-sized print runs. The size of the product and the amount of surface area to be coated affect the economical print size, but the device can efficiently produce batches of up to thousands of business cards.

– When we look at our customers' work, at least 90 percent of it could be implemented with this technology if they wanted to be spot-finished.

An effect you can also feel

DuSense's key strength is the ability to highlight selected details of a printed product with a glossy, embossed varnish. For example, a logo, pattern or image detail can be made to stand out not only visually but also when touched.

Ricoh's production equipment solutions expert Janne Laakso sees significant opportunities in digital spot coating, especially in a situation where overall volumes in the printing industry are declining.

– As the printing market as a whole shrinks, the big question is how to add more value to the printed products being sold. Top coating and other special effects are really interesting. It's not just about the appearance, but also the touch. When you pick up a printed product, you immediately feel like there's something extra in it, Laakso describes.

A good example is the traditional business card. In the digital age, the necessity of a business card may be questioned, but that is precisely why a physical card should stand out.

– When you give a beautifully finished business card to someone who doesn't really believe in business cards anymore, the reaction is often completely different. Suddenly, they start to be interested in the card, Heikola describes.

Spot varnishing works particularly well with soft touch lamination, for example. The contrast between the matte, soft-feeling material and the glossy embossed varnish makes the end result look impressive.

The same idea can be used on invitations, brochures, magazine covers and packaging. Especially on small packages, a special effect can be an effective way to stand out from the competition.

“In the digital age, the necessity of a business card may be questioned, but that's exactly why a physical card should stand out.”

New opportunities

A significant feature of the DuSense device purchased by Trinket is the ability to varnish coated paper without intermediate lamination. This is achieved by corona treatment.

This feature is important, for example, in brochures where lamination is not necessarily an appropriate or desired solution. With the DuSense model acquired by Trinket, spot varnish can be added directly to the printed paper surface.

In addition, the thickness of the varnish layer can be adjusted. A thinner layer creates subtle effects, while a thicker layer creates a clearly felt relief pattern.

The DuSense DDC-810 PRO includes a convenient corona treatment unit, which allows varnishing directly onto coated paper without lamination.

The advantages of digitalization also include the ability to quickly produce a prototype that corresponds to the final product.

– Using traditional methods, making a prototype can be expensive. Digitally, we can create a proof for the customer that matches the final product at a reasonable cost.

The technology also enables the use of variable data in spot varnishing. In principle, each sheet can have a different varnished pattern or detail.

Technology partner

In addition to the four digital presses, Ricoh has supplied Trinket with a wide range of post-processing equipment. The package includes, among other things, laminating technology, Duplo equipment, a booklet maker, a cutter and Multigraf folding equipment. Some of the equipment is in daily use and has a significant impact on the smooth running of production.

A particularly important role is played by Komfi's laminating machine, which processes several jobs a day. It also processes many of the products that DuSense's spot varnishing gives the final touch.

At Trinket, we value the fact that the same partner has extensive knowledge of the company's production environment. Communication is close, practically weekly.

“When a technology partner has familiar people in their administration, sales, and maintenance, collaboration is easier. You don't have to remember so many names and numbers,” Heikola laughs.

For Ricoh, Trinket is an example of a customer whose production uses the equipment supplier's technology to an exceptionally large extent.

The new DuSense investment continues the same development line that Trinket has followed for decades: production is developed step by step and new possibilities are added to the existing entity.

The end result is a printing house that is able to offer its customers increasingly diverse solutions – and make even an ordinary printed product a little more interesting.
